Gilding  >  Glues & Gums
Gum Ammoniac 30ml Gum Ammoniac 30ml
Natural Gum, purified water & preservative. Flows easily off the pen or brush. Dies quickly to an almost transparent glossy finish. Gum Ammoniac is best suited to small areas, small berries, dots, stems and straight lines. For very detailed work you may need two applications, especially if the paper is absorbent. Reactivate gum by breathing on it, press gold onto the tacky gum; wait 2-3mins; it is now ready to be burnished. Wash brush/pen immediately in hot water as the gum will set hard.

The process of gilding with transfer leaf using gum ammoniac.

Gum ammoniac is obtained from a plant grown in the Middle East and North Africa. It may most conveniently be bought as a prepared fluid. (9X3GA). Otherwise it comes in the form of small lumps or crystals. Some colour pigment should be added to the liquid to allow it to be seen on application. Gouache colour or watercolour is suitable. The application may be by pen or brush. With some experience you can tell if you have applied sufficient to the surface.

1. Prepare document and finish all text lettering. Allow areas for any illumination and establish areas for gilding. During this operation the rest of the manuscript surface should be covered securely to prevent surface fouling. Colour work usually follows gilding.

2. Apply prepared gum ammoniac to the area you wish to gild. Allow the gum ammoniac to dry.

3. Cut small pieces of transfer leaf sufficient in size to cover the area or part of the area you wish to gild. Moisten the prepared surface by breathing on it through a straw. Avoid drips of condensation! Carefully apply the leaf face side down and press the back of the tissue with the fingers rubbing with some pressure. A burnishing tool may be used to help this process. Look at the back of the tissue to see if the gold has adhered to the work. Remove the tissue. Small spots where the gold has missed can be re-moistened and re-gilded to make a solid surface. If larger areas have not pick up the gold re-paint with the gum and repeat the process. Gold sticks to gold so you do not need to paint over gold which is already adhering to the surface.

4. It is important to allow time for the gold to harden on the surface as the gum dries. Bits of gold may be brushed away at this point. Do not be in too much of a hurry to do this. Small pieces of gold still on the transfer can be used on other small areas.

5. You can apply a second layer of gold over the first to increase the brightness without applying any further gum. Gold laid on gum ammoniac does not burnish in the same way as on a raised surface.

Roberson's Improved Gold Body

Improved Gold Body or Raising Preparation is used to raise surfaces where an embossed design is required. After gilding it can be burnished.

Improved Gold Body should only be stirred if left for long periods of time; care should be taken to avoid creating air bubbles as this will leave tiny pin holes when it dries. If the mixture is a little stiff a small amount of water can be added to thin it.

Apply the Gold Body with a soft artist's brush and leave to dry. Before applying the gold leaf breathe on the gold body to make the gum tacky again and then press the gold leaf onto the gold body with a soft brush or cotton wool.

The gold design should be left for at least 24 hours before burnishing, and this should be done through a thin transparent non-stick paper such as glassine. It may be directly burnished when the gold body has hardened fully.

Clean equipment with warm soapy water.

Non Hazardous. Not to be taken internally.

Contact with eyes - wash immediately with plenty of water
