Ziller Inks are made with sub-micron particle size pigments and flow consistently well assisting a smooth confident stroke. They are lightfast, waterproof and fully intermixable to create a whole spectrum of colour. They can be diluted considerably with water whilst still retaining good colour or thickened, if required, by using the ink thickener. They clean up quickly and easily with a little ammonia in the water.
Like Artists' Gouache the price of each ink varies with the differing costs of the pigments.
The inks give a rich solid coloured stroke - most colours are opaque.

Ziller Classic Glossy Black Ink Powder
Shown above is a beautiful bird flourish penned by F.W. Tamblyn, probably in the 1920's using the Classic Glossy Black Ink powder. Notice the fine hairlines. Unfortunately this scan does not show the deep dark black glossy color on the broad shades. This bird was one the many examples that Tamblyn created for his mail order class on off hand flourishing.

Ziller Classic Glossy Black Ink Powder
The Ziller Classic Glossy Black Ink Powder was originally called Elegant Glossy Black Ink Powder. The earliest record is of the ink being sold in 1898 in the Penman's Art Journal ads.The ink was formulated for steel dip pens to acheive a fine hairline and a thick glossy broad stroke.F W Tamblyn and Stephen Ziller included this ink in the self study calligraphy kits that they sold starting in 1895 through the 1950's.In 1998 we were unable to obtain the ingredients in reasonable quantities at reasonable prices so that it would be affordable for the penmen. Now, after more than 10 years, penmen keep asking if we can bring back the old formula. So we checked the pricing again and found that the ingredients have become available at a more reasonable price. We are now introducing the Ziller Classic Glossy Black Ink powder.
